  2. Who Has Hearing Loss? • Demographics • More than 32 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss. • More than one million Michigan residents have hearing loss. • One in 10 people under age 45 has hearing loss. • After age 65, the number rises to one in 3.

  3. Impact of Hearing Loss • Even a mild hearing loss can affect every day quality of life. • Relationships • Employment • Education • Social activities • Community participation • Health issues

  4. Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) • The ADA mandates accommodation for persons with hearing loss. • Hearing Assistive Technology provides communication access for persons with hearing loss. • HAT categories: • Alerting • Telecommunication • Personal Listening

  5. Technology Available at the TCC • Computer Assisted Realtime Translation (CART) during Hearing Loss Support Group meetings. • FM Listening System • Traditional CapTel Phone • Web CapTel

  6. CART • CART is the translation of the spoken word into English text using a stenotype machine, notebook computer and realtime software. • Remote CART connects the consumer (us) with a writer (captionist) through a website on the internet. • Our captionist hears what is being said into the microphone and types the words on her computer. The text appears on our screen.

  7. Benefits of CART • Persons with hearing loss receive the same information as anyone else and can interact fully in any setting. • Verbatim record capturing every word spoken as well as environmental sounds. • Can be used in a variety of settings. • Provides full participation for everyone.

  8. Large Area FM System • Connects to existing PA system. • Can be used in a variety of settings. • Compatible with a variety of microphone options. • Broadcasts sound via a specific FM frequency. • Receivers pick up the sound. • Sound is delivered to the ears of the consumer by way of a headset, ear buds or a neckloop.

  9. Traditional CapTel Phone • A specialized amplified telephone designed specifically to interact with the CapTel Captioning Service in order to display captions. The telephone does not, all by itself, translate spoken words into written captions. • Captions appear on a small screen located on the front of the phone. • No extra cost for using the captioning service.

  10. Traditional CapTel Phone (cont’d) • You can try the phone for free at the TCC. • The phone is located in the office next to the lunch room. • Instructions for use are posted nearby. • If office is closed contact front desk for assistance. • http://www.captionedtelephone.com/

  11. Web CapTel • Captioned telephone calls can be made from any computer. • View word for word captions of your telephone conversation over the internet. • No special telephone equipment is needed. Consumers talk on their own phone and view captions on web browser. • https://www.sprintcaptel.com/index.asp • http://www.hamiltoncaptel.com/
