Background • No RCT has compared laparoscopic sigmoid resection (LSR) to open sigmoid resection (OSR) for symptomatic diverticulitis • Prospective, multicentre, double blind RCT • Endpoints • Post op mortality, major and minor complications • Symptomatic diverticulitis of sigmoid colon • Hinchey ǀ,ǁa,ǁb, symptomatic stricture and severe rectal bleeding

  4. Results • 2002-06 , 104 patients in 5 centres • 52 similiar patients each group • LSR- longer, less blood loss • Major comp > in OSR • Minor comp similiar • LSR patients • Less pain, less analgesia requirement, home earlier and better post op quality of life Thank you
