Who Can Apply • Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate • Are working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program  • Are a U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident with an Alien Registration Card, or an eligible non-citizen (refugee, asylum granted) • Have a valid Social Security Number

FAFSA Online! • We recommend that you apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov • Get your PIN Number • The online FAFSA is processed in a few days; the paper FAFSA takes several weeks to process • Check with each College/University about their Priority Dates to get the best aid NOTE: You must submit a new FAFSA application each academic year (each student who is applying for federal aid)!

  9. Student Aid Report (SAR) • SAR: Student’s FAFSA Results -Sent to the student by e-mail or regular mail. -Retain documents/emails for your records • EFC: Expected Family Contribution -This score will be reported to your College/University

  10. Required Documentation • Check with each school’s Financial Aid Office about : • The documentation they require from you (ask if they require another application form or the CSS Profile) • Deadlines • Each school is different!

  11. Formula for Financial Need • COA: Total cost of attendance to attend an institution for an academic year (varies by school) • EFC: Expected Family Contribution score from the FAFSA. COA – EFC = Need* *This amount will vary at each schoolSome universities offer more aid than others.

Get Organized • Research scholarships for which you match the criteria • It is NEVER too EARLY to start researching scholarships • Avoid companies/organizations which require a fee and guarantee scholarships • Keep a calendar of scholarship deadlines • Postmark v. Received • Keep a notebook of the scholarships you want to apply along with the contact information, requirements, application instructions

Get Prepared – Portfolio • Wisely choose who will write your recommendation letters • Write an essay about yourself, your accomplishments, your strengths, your goals and how you will achieve them • Develop and update your resume • Request official transcripts with ample time to make the deadline • Get a good photo of yourself that shows your maturity and professionalism
