  1. Narrative Structure Rosie Dunning GCSE Media Studies.

  2. What Is It? In media narrative is the telling of a story. we make connections and interpretations based on those events. everything we see has beginning middle and end.

  3. The 5 Stages of Narrative...

  4. Stage 1 Equilibrium This is where everything is fine in the film. The main characters and the setting is introduced.

  5. Stage 2 Disruption Of Events There’s a disruption in the film. But the main characters usually don’t know, they are yet to discover what is to come.

  6. Stage 3 Recognition of Events The key characters realise what’s going on, however the audience already knows what’s going on.

  7. Stage 4 Repair Of Disruption This is the longest part of the film. Usually mini disruptions come up while they are trying to resolve the main disruption.

  8. Stage 5 A New Equilibrium The disruption is resolved. Though this are different from the original equilibrium there is peace.

  9. Sometimes.... Sometimes a film doesn’t follow the narrative structure. This is usually called an open narrative. It’s called this because the film can never be peaceful.

  10. An Example Is.... An example of this is Twilight, because it’s an open narrative. I will explain why it’s an open narrative.

  11. Stage 1 Equilibrium There is a slight disruption in the move, as Bella doesn’t want to move to forks but is doing so to make her mum happy. When she gets to forks the scene is set and the other main character, Edward, is introduced.

  12. Stage 2 Disruption Of Events There is a slight disruption of events as Edward acts weird towards Bella then saves her from being killed by a van. So Bella realises there is something up, with Edward, but isn’t sure what.

  13. Stage 3 Recognition Of Events Bella finds out that Edward is a vampire. This is something that she can not change so there cant be a new equilibrium.

  14. Stage 4 Repair Of Disruption As she cant change that Edward is a vampire there is another disruption, James tries to kill Bella.

  15. Stage 5 New Equilibrium The problem with James is resolved but there cant be peace because Edward is still a vampire and that can’t be resolved. So that makes the film an open narrative.
