Social Bookmarking • The goals of this presentation include the following: • To define the properties of social bookmarking • To introduce teachers to the benefits of social bookmarking • To illustrate the advantages of social bookmarking by accessing one such site: www.delicious.com • To target this application for K-8 teachers • Social Bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata. (wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking ) • Delicious is a social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source. With emphasis on the power of the community. Delicious greatly improves how people discover, remember and share on the Internet. (http://delicious.com/help/about)

  2. Properties & Benefits of Social Bookmarking • To focus results for students when doing research. Sometimes a google search provides overwhelming and undesirable results for a specific topic. • To easily share the benefits of group research, rather than fax, email, or copy information. • To publicly save one’s previous research information that can be accessed from any internet computer. • To quickly access common topics you’re most interested in by viewing bookmarks and tags.

Uses of Social Bookmarking in the Classroom • Narrow student choices in research on the internet • Avoid millions of hits when doing a google/yahoo search • Share educational websites with students • Enrichment work on various topics • Creates an online classroom community that extends beyond the regular school day.

  5. Suggested Projects 1 Science: Create a website containing a poster of a rainforest with the animals that live there. Use delicious.com to bookmark sites from UTube about rainforest animals. Link them to your site so that each time you click on one of the animals it links you to a short movie about each animal. Social Studies: Create a webpage containing a world map. Use furl.com to bookmark and save information on each continent. Each time you click on one of the 7 continents it links you to a site that has information on that continent. Math: Create a website that lists 6 skills that will be covered in one year. Use delicious.com to bookmark and save educational games that match those skills. Link each game to your site so that each time you click on a skill it takes you to a corresponding game.

  6. Suggested Projects 2 Reading : Create a recreational website. Use furl.com to bookmark sites about amusement parks. Place links on your site for each amusement park you find. Make a power Point Presentation about the history of amusement parks. Writing: Write a report about your family vacation. Create a wiki site where you summarize the beginning, middle and end of the story along with illustrations. Other students can add to it by writing about the place where they went for a vacation. Health : Set up a wiki site with a list of healthy foods. Place each food into a graph template. Other students can go on and vote for their favorite from the list. At the end of the week, bring in samples of the food that won the vote.
