Why Study Social Studies? • Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. -George Santayana • If you do not know your history- you are like a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree. - Micheal Chrichton • History is often used to control and confuse- Ramirez (adapted from Orwell’s 1984)

Why History? • Read the article “Why History?” by David McCullough. • Pick your favorite quote from the article and write it down (large print) on the piece of paper I have provided you. • If you finish early, re-read the article or decorate your quote. • You will share your quote and post it in our room once everyone is finished.

  12. Other Reasons Why We Study Social Studies • Schema • Culturally Literate: “A more profound enjoyment of life” • Leads to better reading • Acquisition of skills: critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, inclusion, cooperation, service, etc. • You will rule in trivia games
