Mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation for a person with mental health problems to achieve full human potential or “personhood” in leading a meaningful life in communities of his or her choice. Defining Recovery 3
Fundamental Principles of Recovery • Strength-based • Nonlinear • Self-directed • Individualized and person-centered • Empowering • Holistic • Peer supported • Involves society’s respect for consumers and their rights • Involves a consumer’s courage, responsibility, and hope in moving toward recovery
Lead Transformation by― • Educating others about the meaning of recovery and the value of hope in achieving it. • Working with providers to develop person-centered planning and individualized recovery plans. • Sharing your stories—YOU are the evidence. • Being involved in your State’s mental health planning process. • Identifying leaders who can expand the recovery concept.
