But what do the statistics show? • Drinking in general has increased more among middle-aged and older people than amongst young people • Binge drinking has declined among young men aged 16-24 • There has been an increase in binge drinking amongst women, but in those aged over 25 • Dramatic increase in consumption levels of 11-13 year olds who drink

  4. Older generations drinking more

  5. So what is JRF doing? • Identified new area of research on young people’s drinking • Not divorced from adults’ drinking but reflects the wider drinking culture • Funded programme of work focussing on how we can contribute to changing dangerous or harmful drinking patterns

  6. Building up the evidence base • What are the most influential factors? • Family • Friends and social groups • Media • Celebrity • Ethnicity and culture

  7. What needs to be done? • Will be able to better answer this when our programme has come to fruition • Much has already been done on the policy front • Publication of Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy in 2004 marked a definite change in policy • Three key areas…
