  2. A sentence in natural order begins with the subject, which is followed by the verb. • Four ducks live by the pond.

  3. A sentence that begins with all or part of the predicate is in inverted order. • By the pond live four ducks.

  4. No matter where the subject is in a sentence, the subject and the verb must agree. Pay particular attention to subject-verb agreement when the subject does not appear first in a sentence. • First, find the subject. Then make the verb agree with it. • There are two roads to the zoo.

  5. What is the subject of each sentence? Which verb form agrees with it? • In the world’s oceans (is, are) dolphins. • (Have, Has) you ever studied their behavior? • There (is, are) many theories about their communication. • Through their speech dolphins (show, shows) feelings. • How (do, does) researchers study dolphin behavior in the wild?

  6. Interrupted Order • The verb does not always agree with the nearest noun. This noun may be part of a phrase between the subject and the verb. • A sentence is in interrupted order when a word or a phrase interrupts the subject and the verb. • First, find the subject, and then make the verb agree with it. • The mice in that cage are growing very fast.

  7. What is the subject of each sentence? Which verb form agrees with it? • 6. The whales of the toothed-whale group (has, have) blowholes and teeth. • 7. The narwhal, one of these whales, (has, have) a long tusk. • 8. The tusk of this species (is, are) actually a sensitive tooth. • 9. Usually only male adults of this group (has, have) tusks. • 10. No expert on whales (knows, know) the function of the tusk.
