  3. GROUP DYNAMICS Parallel phase • Can I trust the leader? Safety • Prerequisite: make contact • Build up authority, then give it away • Balance it – not too fast • Time your input: final remark counts • Set the rules and live up to them

  4. GROUP DYNAMICS Inclusion phase • Get rid of your central position • Increase of intimacy • Mutual group relations increase (pairs, • sub groups) • Different opinions, conflicts, scape goats • Informal leaders, hidden discontent

  5. GROUP DYNAMICS Inclusion phase • Conflicts are normal: in this phase stayed tuned on content • Informal leader: - use to provoke discussion • - let him show all • - compliments and tips to him • - too smart? Take apart – continue? • Boss want to join: don’t!

BUILDING UP AUTHORITY • First little attack on authority • Intimacy is still low – don’t involve the group • Set the informal rules (coffee, telephones, whispering) • Create safety • Remain warm, curious, interested • Don’t defend yourself, don’t argue • Don’t ask participants for opinion too fast

BUILDING UP AUTHORITY • Wait for silence at the start – “force them” • Let your first sentences be fluent • Be convinced of your program • Dear to bluff a little; your program will answer their questions • Spot what everybody has to learn, helps you to focus • Use flipchart/sheet - clarifies your message • Let them learn something essential before first break

  10. BUILDING UP INTIMACY • Let people do something – small exercise • Switch on the humor button • Set up of the room – make that everybody sees the others • Build up group work (step by step) • Let people react on each other • Preserve mutual respect • Stay in charge • Be open about yourself
