What is National Board Certification? • Demonstration of your teaching practice measured against high and rigorous standards. • Symbol of commitment to excellence in teaching. • Credential attesting that you have been assessed by your peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about student learning and acts effectively on those judgments. • Voluntary (compliments state license)

  3. What is National Board Certification? • Professional growth and improvement • A way to deepen knowledge of subject matter • Become more skillful in daily classroom instruction and student assessment, resulting in improved student learning

  4. Basis for National Board Certification • Five Core Propositions: • Teachers are committed to students and their learning. • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. • Teachers are members of learning communities.

  5. Standards for National Board Certification • NBPTS Committees • A copy of the standards can be purchased from NBPTS for $15 or downloaded free. • 1.800.22TEACH

  6. Fees and Incentives • Application ($65) • Assessment Fee ($2,500) • NEA and AFT Loans Available • State Grants/Local School System Grants • State Salary Stipends Upon Completion • Range from $0 to $10,000 • For the Life of the Certificate (10 years)

  7. Eligibility • Baccalaureate degree • Minimum of three years teaching experience • Valid state teaching license
