  2. Types of Programs CEGEP • Two streams available: • Pre-university: Two years, followed by professional studies at university. • Career Programs: Three years, leading directly to the job market OR possibly to university studies.

  3. Programs Continued • Vocational Education • Trade Schools • Programs available through EMSB • Majority want you to have a minimum of Sec. IV Math, English, and French • Armed Forces • Studies out of province-Carleton University, Maritime Universities, Algonquin College, L.C.C. Grade 12

  11. Getting My High School Diploma • What do I need? • Minimum of 54 credits (Sec IV & V) • 20 of these credits must be Sec. V

  12. Requirements • Must Pass: • Sec V English (6 credits) • Sec V French (4 credits) • Sec IV Math (4 credits) • Sec IV Science and Technology (4-6 credits) • Sec IV History & Citizenship (4 credits) • Sec IV Arts Education (2 credits) • Sec V ERC or Phys Ed. (2 credits)

  13. But I’m only in 9th Grade… • This year’s grades can have an effect on next year’s courses! • History, Science, Math • 9th grade marks first year of two-year program • What is learned this year will carry-over

But… • Math • For some future programs (CEGEP, etc.) certain types of Math and Science are needed. • This year’s final marks in grade 9 determines the path you will go into in Grade 10/Secondary IV. Science or CST math. Need at least 75% to go into science math. • Need at least 60% to pass your courses. • POP course gives you 4 Grade 10 credits!

  16. Knowing Yourself • What courses interest me? • What courses am I doing well in? • Am I a hands-on learner or do I enjoy academic environments? • What are my strengths and weaknesses?

  17. More About Myself • What are my occupational daydreams? • In terms of a career, what are important criteria that they have to meet? (i.e. financial, amount of training and schooling). • Where do I see myself in ten years?

  18. No need to stress! • It is okay if you do not have the answers to these questions, that is not the intention, rather, these are questions that may serve as a tool to guide you through this challenging process.

  19. Career Explorations • Available to gr.10 & gr.11 • ½ or full day visit • Many different placement available • Ex. Nurse, Architect, Daycare Assistant, Lawyer, etc. • See what different careers involve! • Deadline ~November 2010

  25. Admission Requirements • Marks • Credits • Pre-requisites • Remedial, Regular, and Advanced (enriched) standing • Missing Credits and/or prerequisites

What if I do not meet all the requirements? • Some students may not have proper course requirements (i.e. Math 506/Science Math) or may not meet the grade requirements for some courses. • If you fall into these categories you can enter into a transition program at *CEGEP* to fulfill these requirements and then re-apply to your program of choice. • **Exploration Sciences at Dawson College**
