  2. Historical Document • Declaration of Independence (Political Theory) “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….”

  3. Topic or Main Idea • The beginning of the Declaration of Independence states the society’s goals and sets a standard by which to evaluate its accomplishments following the document, and to tell the rights that they should posses.

  4. Point of View or Bias • The writers of the Declaration of Independence wanted to start with a powerful statement about why the colonies were formed. They wrote about a truth that they believed in and that was that everyone has certain equal and unalienable rights.

  5. Inferences • Wanted to change the way people in the colonies felt • Show that relations between Britain and the colonies had changed • Writings of that time influenced thinking like Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry and John Locke
