Six-Plus One Traits of Writing • Writing Process • Prewriting, Drafting, Evaluate & Revise, Proofread and Publish • Write for a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes • Technology (Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc.) • Typing/keyboarding skills • Speaking/Listening Skills • Packet and spelling test given weekly  Language Arts

Journeys: our adopted textbook of short stories • Literature Studies-students are encouraged to purchase their own copies of the five novels we will be reading • Project-based Book Reports~ one per semester • Focus on expository and exemplar text • Independent reading expectation of 30 min. nightly Reading

Common Core- McGraw-Hill textbooks • Problem-solving skills • Conceptual understanding along with procedural fluency • Academically rigorous/ multi-step problems • Textbook and additional resources are available through Infinite Campus. • Please read and sign the math policy coming home with your child next week. • Imperative to memorize math facts • Packets and tests are given weekly. Science- • STEM, Scientific Method, History & Importance of Scientists' Contributions, Plant & Animal Cells, Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal Energy, Human Body Systems, Weather/Atmosphere, and Bodies of Water • Social Science- • Geography, Map Skills, Ancient Civilizations from Mesopotamia to Rome, Middle Ages/Renaissance, and World Religions • Current Events Science/Social Science

  6. Curriculum for the CATS program will be distributed in the classroom by Mrs. Best. CATS

Internet User Agreement-new BYOT policy: personal and mobile devices approved for educational use (Smart phones, Nooks, and iPads are encouraged and used for reading and teacher approved activities with use of secure district Wi-Fi)  • Computers (6th grade C.O.W.) • Gain knowledge about technology • Develop skills to use the technology • Apply and interact with technology • Technology Class with Mrs. Gerson-every Day 6 or Day 4 (CATS) • Cell Phones • Unless being used in the classroom for academic purposes, all phones must remain in silent mode and stored in their backpack while on campus. Violations of this policy will result in a reflection form and loss of technology privileges for the duration of the year. • Earbuds/Headphones • Ensure your child has a set with them to use in class and during computer lab.   8. Compliance letters: • Some students are receiving letters today. • Proof of required immunizations- turn in to the health office • Students without proof will not be able to attend school next week. • Questions: see Heather Turner in the Health Office this evening. Immunization Records

  9. Middle School Grade Band (6th-8th) • Assignments will receive a 25% deduction if one day late, a 50% deduction (2 or more days late) and will be marked as missing and calculated as a zero if not turned in at all. • Purpose is to reinforce skills • Spend up to 60 minutes a night in accordance with the district policy • Agendas will be used daily and come home nightly • Zero hour will be offered Monday-Friday at 7:45 a.m. Please check schedule for specific location. Positive Reinforcement • End of the Quarter Celebrations (for students with less than three reflection forms and passing grades of a 70% or higher) • Class Discipline • A reflection form will be issued due to 2 or more incomplete/missing assignments in all classes, behavior issues (teacher’s discretion), dress code violations, etc. • Communiqué = A Reflection Form • Reflection Forms~ 3 strikes and you’re out! • Misconduct ticket ~ Severe behavior ~ Referral to Dean ~ Loss of Quarter Party • STAR Room ~ Reflection room for extreme behavior issues • Please sign policy letter coming home in your welcome packet.   11. Please make sure your child is at school on time ~ 8:25. Excessive tardiness will be referred to the office for further action. • All tardy students need to check in at the office and head straight to block.   • We understand children get sick, and there are family emergencies, etc. Students need to come to zero hour to retrieve missed assignments. Work will not be given out prior to a scheduled absence or taking to the front office for pick up. • Please schedule your vacations and/or appointments around the district calendar. Monday-Friday 7:45-8:25 a.m. • Students must arrive before 8:10 a.m. or they will not be allowed to join session. • This is a time for students to gather missing assignments due to absences, ask questions about homework, make-up missed tests, and/or work independently in a quiet setting. • This is NOT an individual tutoring session. • A schedule is posted on the doors of the building and outside each classroom entry.  Zero Hour

  13. Hats and sunglasses may only be worn outside. • No artificial hair colors or disruptive hair styles (Kool-aid, hair dye, etc.). Also, make-up is discouraged. • No obscene, vulgar or inappropriate graphics on shirts.  • Make sure straps are at least 1 inch wide  • No short shorts! •  Hygiene counts! • For additional information please read the district handbook (i.e. skirts/shorts/tank-tops/flip-flops) Dress Code Highlights

Please make sure that your child comes to school with their lunch, assignments, and school supplies. • Please provide your child with a healthy snack (2 designated snack times each day). • No soda or colored beverages in the classroom. • Please make sure that your child has a water bottle each day. • Breakfast prices are now $1.75 • Lunch prices are now $2.95 • Please keep your child’s food account up to date. • Homemade goods (birthdays, holidays, etc.) are not permitted. Progress Reports and Report Cards: will be accessible ON-LINE ONLY this year.  • It is imperative that you log-in on Infinite Campus Parent Portal to view grades throughout the year. • If you are not sure how to do this, visit Carolina in the front office tonight. • Push Notifications: enable notifications to be alerted of missing and late assignments, attendance, and up-to-date grades. • Emergency Contact and Handbook: sent via Infinite Campus. Log in to confirm and update information. Infinite Campus

Check your child’s agenda daily and read the nightly e-mail from Mr. Norris to stay on top of all assignments and due dates. • CATS-Mrs. Best will send out a Friday newsletter in lieu of a nightly email. • E-Mail – most effective way to contact us • Teacher Web Pages • Individual Teacher Pages • Sixth Grade Team Page • Please limit classroom disruptions (after school arrangements, lunch, water bottles, etc.) Communication

Parent Pick up Lane • Please pull all the way forward in the parent pick up lane. • Please refrain from using your cell phone while in the parent pick up lane. • Children need to exit the car on the side closest to the curb. • If your child needs assistance, please park in the parking lot and walk him or her to the building. Please do not get out of your car in the parent pick up lane. • When picking up your child after school, please utilize your sign that you received from the front office. The sign should have child’s/children’s last name and grade displaying in the window while in the parent pick up lane. Pick up goes quicker and smoother when these signs are displayed .  • Only cross at the designated cross-walk where the crossing guard on duty will assist you. • Thank you so much for your help in keeping our Heroes safe and for making drop off and pick up a pleasant experience!

  19. Art Masterpiece 2019-2020 • Art Masterpiece is an art enrichment program that introduces students to artists and varying methods of artwork. It is held on an entirely volunteer basis. • Volunteer Art Guides do not have to have a background in art or even be creative. • Lessons are already prepared, and training is provided on how to teach the lessons.   • Volunteers teach 6 lessons about an artist and then lead students in a project inspired by that artist’s methods. Lessons are spread throughout the school year and are about 1 hour long. • Hull has a dedicated art classroom with all the supplies needed and available to teach these lessons! • Check out the Art room today – Room #28 • The students LOVEthe art classes and always have a fun time learning about the artists and trying new techniques and mediums. • Sign up today with your teacher! • Contact the coordinator athullartmasterpiece@gmail.comfor more information.

Activity Fees • Fees for the year: • $25 covers quarter parties, Greek Olympics, educational opportunities, etc. • $150 Science Camp • All fees are paid via Infinite Campus and must be paid in full by September 20th to participate in 1st quarter party and reserve a spot at camp. • Tax Credit donations:           $400 (if you file jointly)            $200 (if you file single)
