  1. Dillemas 3 & 4

  2. Dilemma 3: What Should President Madison do to Protect Sailors & Settlers? • Pres. Madison offered Br. & Fr. a deal: • If you stop attacking our ships, the US will stop trading with your enemy. • Napoleon agreed to the deal, but secretly told his navy to keep seizing Am. ships. • We stopped trading with Br. • Br. kept seizing our ships and kidnapping our sailors. • Madison is lost on what to do!

  3. Dilemma 3 • New England & Federalists didn’t want to go to war b/c their ports would be blockaded (blocked off by the Br.) • Many Southerners & Westerners wanted war. Accused Br. of provoking the Native Americans. • Indians were getting annoyed with settlers moving into their territory.

  4. Dilemma 3 • Battle of Tippecanoe • William Henry Harrison led our troops against the Native Americans. • When we won, wefound Br. Guns!!! • Americans = MAD • Henry Clay & John Calhoun from South Carolina wanted us to go to war & were called “War Hawks.” • Madison’s question: Was the nation strong enough to launch the arrow or war?

  5. What Happened: Madison launches the War of 1812 • No more isolationism: war! • War of 1812 – was harder than both Ams. & Br. Thought • Battling for Canada – we didn’t get it. • Move into Washington D.C. – Br. Burned down several buildings including the Capitol Building and the White House. • Br. Attack Baltimore –Francis Scott Key watched as Baltimore was bombarded all night & was happy to see our Am. Flag still flying at dawn. (National Anthem!)

  6. What Happened • Battle of New Orleans – • Br. Surrendered to Am. forces in NY • Word didn’t reach Am. Yet and they continued fighting. • Gen. Andrew Jackson was in charge of a militia in New Orleans. • Jackson and his men fought hard – 2,000 Br. Troops were dead/wounded & 20 Americans were dead/wounded.

  7. What happened • Neither side really won. • Treaty of Ghent: settled nothing. Seizing Am. Ships faded away with time. • Indian resistance in NW weakened after Tecumseh died. • National pride in the US surged • Federalists were damaged by opposition to war.

  8. What Happened: The US Issues the Monroe Doctrine • Monroe Doctrine: • European nations are not permitted to try to take over any part of the Americas. • We would consider it “dangerous to our peace and safety.” (Monroe) • Hidden message: We are no longer weak/divided! • Other countries were mad that we tried to tell them what to do. • This policy has stuck around for over 180 years!

  9. Dilemma 4: What should Pres. Monroe do to support the new Latin Am. Nations? • Many Latin Am. Colonies were revolting ag. Spain. • Mexico: “Cry of Dolores” = speech by Miguel Hidalgo to rally Mexico to fight for ind. From Spain. • Simon Bolivar led Venezuela • Jose de San Martin led Argentina

  10. Dilemma 4 • Many Ams. & Br. Supported Latin Am. Revolutions. • Now they could trade with them! • Other European leaders wanted to help Spain take back colonies. • Monroe had to decide if the US would support these new nations or not!
