  3. Key challenges • Literacy • Aspirations • 5+ A*-C E/M • Preparing our youngsters for the world beyond their school

  4. Why is PSHE important? • Because it deals with the world as it is and not as we would like it to be? • Addresses issues that are important to young people and if they are not dealt with, will become barriers to learning/achievement and will impact on GCSEs in Maths/English • Develops skills that can be applied across the curriculum e.g. developing oracy • Contribution to whole school ethos

  5. Ideal World • No sexual activity until a person was 30!!!!! • No alcohol/drugs/cigarettes • Parents/carers who have informed conversations with their children • All Swanlea students achieve 5+ A*-C E/M

  7. Information Gap Who will talk to our youngsters if we don’t?

  8. Other young people who are as ill-informed as they are?

  9. Difference PSHE makes at Swanlea • School ethos • Relationships • Risks • Managing change • Career choices/raising aspirations

  10. Impact • Behaviour – towards members of the school community and beyond, personal attitude towards risk • Attitude towards learning • Learning skills – oracy – contributing to discussions, other viewpoints, working in groups

  11. Challenges • New government floor targets for 5+ A*-C E/M • Curriculum delivery models/squeeze • Community sensitivities • Cut backs in LA youth provision • Staff development

  12. Curriculum Models • Discrete PSHE or delivered through faculties • What elements need to be delivered discretely or can be best integrated into subject areas? • Where is the time to deliver PSHE?

  13. Community Sensitivities • Involving parents/carers & governors in the creation of SRE programmes that the community is “comfortable with

  14. Cut backs in LA provision • Involving external agencies in the delivery of some of the PSHE curriculum

  15. Staff Development • Who delivers PSHE? • Tutors • May lack the confidence to deliver sensitive area • Specialist staff • Implications of delivery model for other areas of the curriculum • Cost

  16. Conclusion • Deep commitment to the importance of PSHE because of its impact on our students’ lives and the part it plays in creating a positive learning ethos within the school
