  2. SG1 History • Established 2007-02: • analyze status quo of energy efficiency and renewable resources (existing IEC standards, ongoing projects) • identify gaps and opportunities for new work • set objectives for electrical energy efficiency in products and systems (note: at the 2009-03 meeting, it was agreed that setting limits remains regulators’ responsibilities) • recommend further actions

  3. SMB SG1 to Date • 1st meeting in May 2007 • 7 Meetings held around the world since the 1st meeting • 8th meeting to be held Oct 13 in Seattle • 40 recommendations made to SMB • 30 approved and accepted • 10 in various stages – submitted for approval or referred back to SG1 • “Mission accomplished” • During the 7th meeting, SG1 concluded that generally the assigned mission has been accomplished, with only a few issues requiring clarification

  4. SMB Decision 137/8 • Approve SG 1 recommendations 27 - 34 • Request clarification: 15 revised, 18 revised, and 20 revised • To note the ongoing work in IEC TC59, IEC TC100, and IEC TC108

  5. SMB 4264R, revised SG1 Recommendation 15, Household appliances • “Recognizing differing national and regional legislation/standards for classifying and labeling household appliances (energy consumption and energy efficiency) • TC 59 and its SCs should prepare a Technical Report which describes and compares these requirements. • …The TR should discuss possibilities / prerequisites for future alignment and potential support from standardization.” • The SC59 action remains pending.

  6. SMB 4264R, revised SG1 Recommendation 18, Standby losses, off-mode losses • “TC 100 and TC 108 should present to SMB/SG 1 their existing standards, ongoing, and planned • With attention to describing pertinent regional legislation, • External power supplies (AC/DC converters) are of interest.”

  7. Discussion • Option to summarize the standards • IEC TC100 response remains pending

  8. SMB 4264R, revised SG1 Recommendation 20, “Consumer electronics products” • “Different national and regional legislation/standards for classifying/ labeling equipment with respect to energy consumption and energy efficiency, • TC 100 should prepare a Technical Report to describe, compare, and explain possible future alignment and potential support from standardization.”

  9. Discussion • The IEC TC100 response remains pending. • National / regional energy departments, secretariats, and other organizations generate the related information

  10. Collaborations • ISO/TMB SAG E Energy Efficiency & Renewable Resources • Joint SAG E/IEC SG 1 meeting (03/09) on energy efficiency and international standards • SAG E very active with 36 recommendations: (14 Complete, 8 Pending, 14 under discussion) • Joint ISO/IEC work recommended for vocabulary: CHP, boilers, buildings, Solar energy and biofuels, Smart grid, Water sector standards and Energy services

  11. Other Collaborations • IEC/CAB WG12 Energy Efficiency • CEN/CENELEC Sector Forum Energy Management • International Commission on Illumination (CIE) • International Energy Agency (IEA)

  12. SMB-SG1/0099/DC Possible, future activities • To be discussed at 8th meeting (October 13) • Convener proposes to amend SG1’s task to continue to address any upcoming issues • Potentially to include the follow up of TC/SC activities on SG1 recommendations • SG1 was asked to comment on IEC Whitepaper “Electrical Energy Efficiency” • “Meet annually with the IEC General Meeting”
