  1. REPORT TO ILCSC from the WorldWide Study on Physics and Detectors for ILC 1. LCWS at Stanford 18-22 March 2005 2. Issues being discussed with BB 3. LCWS (+?) at Bangalore 9-14 March 2005 4. Regional Meetings 5. New panels on software, benchmarks, 2 IRs, ILC case etc. etc.? David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  2. LCWS at Stanford, March 2005 Biggest ever. 401 registered participants. Highlights included - BB’s public acceptance of GDE Directorship. - Full establishment of 3 detector concepts, with inter-regional leadership. - First meeting of R&D panel. C.Damerell – chair, RAL J-C.Brient, Ecole Polytechnique H.Weerts, FNAL D. Peterson, Cornell T.Takeshita, Shinsu H.J.Kim, Kyungpook David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  3. Discussions with Barry Barish • Relation of WWS to GDE? • BB suggested 3 co-chairs join regular GDE • meetings. But important to remain as independent, • representative voice for users. • 2. Proposed deliverables in next two years? • Would like to co-ordinate with GDE machine plans. • - Report on missing detector R&D: end 2005, • to coincide with report on machine R&D. • - “Volume” on detector concepts: end 2006 • to accompany machine CDR. • Would be a single writeup drawing on all 3 • concepts for performance and costs. • Needs agreement of concepts. • Snowmass will make a start. David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  4. Discussions with Barry Barish • Options (e-e-, , e+ pol’n, GigaZ, high L) • Agreed with BB, prefer all kept open • for next 2 years at least. • Some of us worry that needs more R&D to • maintain an expert support group who can tackle • the major problems and speak up for it. • (Had small meeting of experts just before LCWS last March; • will produce proposal for graded R&D programme) David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  5. LCWS Bangalore 9-14 March 2006 BB said “We have to stop meeting like this” – i.e. separately Snowmass is a good first step. Can LCWS be combined with a GDE meeting? Rohini Godbole says Bangalore could accommodate ~200 to 300 for LCWS, and might fit in another ~60-80. BB quite keen to have a open GDE meeting there. We have also talked with ILC WG4 leaders (BDIR). They would like to meet there, if it fits GDE plans. India has both ambitious technical groups and good theorists, all of whom have difficulty in travelling overseas. LCWS going ahead. Rohini would like early decision on scale of other ILC activities at Bangalore. David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  6. Regional Physics and Detectors Workshops Hope for 1 per region per year (including LCWS?). Important to keep theorists in touch, and young physicists. How can they be co-ordinated with GDE meetings? ACFA 11-14 July, Daegu, Korea. ALCPG has become Snowmass – quasi international - fully co-ordinated with ILC workshop. ECFA 14-17 November, Vienna - only room for a small addition there; - what about GDE mtg. just before or after, in Europe? David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  7. Special WWS Panels MDI panel.Woods/Bambade/Tauchi preparing list of questions for concepts to tackle before Snowmass. Need to work out how this panel relates to GDE (WG4?) Physics Case panel. Preparing input to EPP2010 soon. Considering restatement of brief case to HEP community. Richard/Grannis/Okada/Patterson/Yamashita/Miller/ Zerwas/Peskin/Oreglia/Miyamoto/Hewettt 2 Interaction Region Case panel. Brau/Omori/Settles/(+Butler as D’s Adv.) 1st draft to be ready for Snowmass. (WWS+BB will see 0th draft soon) Software Tools panel? Aim for sharing between concepts. Behnke/Graf/Miyamoto are ad hoc panel;  more official? Benchmarks panel. Being formed now, ahead of Snowmass. 2 distinct functions: -set goals/tests for detector performance. - demonstrate physics reach. David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005

  8. Special WWS Panels Concept Costing panel? Asking concepts to send costing experts to Snowmass. Plan they’ll work with GDE cost-engineers. Maybe this grows into costing panel for end 2006 “volume”. Editorial Board ? - for end 2006 “volume”. David J. Miller for WWS to ILCSC at Frankfurt, 10 May 2005
