Our project at Pendoylan Primary School focuses on Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC). Located in a rural setting in Wales, with 98% of students bussed in, we aim to address the lack of cultural diversity by integrating global themes into the curriculum. Our initiatives, including a whole school approach to ESDGC, promote children’s understanding of global perspectives through activities like exploring ingredients for Christingle and learning Christmas greetings in different languages. We engage students in Olympic-themed projects to foster values of friendship, courage, and respect.

ESDGCEducation For Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Our Project in Pendoylan…
Who are we? • Small Church in Wales Primary • Rural Setting • Not situated in the children’s community • 98% bussed in from different areas • Lack of cultural diversity
Back at School • Inset was delivered on what we had learned from the course. • Following the wishes of SMT a whole school approach to ESDGC was requested. • Teachers felt they wanted to play a part for their own Professional Development.
Christmas! • Individual Short Class Projects involving peer observation and coaching. • Foundation Phase – Origins of ingredients to make a Christingle. • Year 3 – Christmas Greetings in different languages.
What did we learn? • Children enjoyed activities which encouraged them to look globally at ingredients and greetings. • We realised how easily our own teaching could become one dimensional. • Recognition that especially lower down the school, as they become simplified, topics can easily become more one dimensional. • What we learnt on the course made us more aware of pitfalls and made us question how we present topics to the children.
Olympic Project • Inset led by us with Staff and Governor responsible for ESDGC in order to select whole school topic • Staff decision to identify and explore ESDGC themes into Olympic project already planned. • Central theme identified of Global Citizenship, focussing on Identity and Culture. • Large whole school project planned for Spring and Summer terms for 2012. • Registered with the London 2012 Get Set programme.
Olympic Project • As a church school we have recently adopted a values based approach which lent itself to our ESDGC work in our Olympic Project. • The values of friendship, courage and respect were identified as a focus as they mirror some of the Olympic values.
Whole school starting point • Separate Key Stage assemblies introducing the Olympic Values.
Displays • Central Display of Olympic values, symbol and creeds created as a focal point for the children. • Friendship reflection area created in the communal area.
Class Activities • Support a number of Olympic teams in each class. • Encourage children to research country and culture both at home and in school. • Support their team during the Olympics not just team GB. • As this is a unique ongoing project ESDGC will be largely led by learners …. Who knows where this will end!
