  2. Problem Statement • Radio Communication between Public Safety Agencies seems to be one of the biggest problems of which our agencies have during an accident, terrorist act or natural disaster. Houma Police Department

  3. Problems Cont. • When attempting to address these problems, funding and the lack of interest in individual agencies now becomes the biggest obstacle. Houma Police Department

  4. History of towards Interoperability • In the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, all public safety agencies were communicating on a low band frequencies (39.5 MHz). • In the mid to late 70’s, some public safety agencies started going towards a high band frequency (154-156 MHz). This was the first time that agencies started getting away from communicating with each other. • In the mid to late 80’s, some public safety started going towards the 800 MHz frequencies. This continued to separate public safety agencies from being interoperable. • In the late 80’s, Louisiana State Police started working on a statewide interoperable system, but their was a cost for agencies to get onto the statewide system. (approx $50,000.00 per year) • In the 90’s, some local agencies started working towards the statewide system or started working towards doing their own 800 MHz frequencies.

Communication Interoperability • Communications interoperability is the ability of public safety and service agencies to talk within and across entities and jurisdictions via radio and associated communications systems, exchange voice, data, and/or video with one another on demand, in real time, when needed, when authorized.   10. Problem # 1 with Solution • Problem:How do you get agencies to uses their radios? • Solution: Within your districts, have radio days. Meaning instead of using your cell phones, uses your radios for the whole day. Test, test and Test again. Get involved. • Don’t ways wait for the next distress to reach out and make with each other.
