  3. 1. National Water Resources Infrastructure • The NWRI Branch in DWA develops new water resources infrastructure and operates and maintains existing assets for the storage and supply of raw water. • Existing infrastructure is grouped into four clusters 3

Irrigation Schemes • Most irrigation schemes are operated and maintained by Water User Associations (WUAs)/Irrigation Boards • DWA provides capital for major refurbishment or rehabilitation as the schemes are still owned by the Department • DWA operated schemes are for multi–users: domestic/industrial and irrigation • Irrigation water released from dams into rivers 5

  10. 3. Conclusion • Most irrigation schemes have reached end of their useful lives • Major rehabilitation work required • Water tariffs not adequate to fund capital rehabilitation of schemes • Water losses from canals 10
