  2. A Brief History of Asbestos in Perth, WA Fibre material was discovered as an indestructible material centuries ago. Due to the length and flexibility of its fibres, it became incorporated into manufacturing products, such as brake pads, fabric, gaskets and paper. It blocked heat transfer because it is fireproof and it, therefore, represented the ideal insulation material. In both its fabric and compacted-brick forms, it was used to cover heating systems and kilns.

  3. A fibrous mineral occurs naturally. Therefore, it was simply mined and not manufactured. Just like in many other states, it is present in vast natural deposits in Western Australia. In 1936, blue fibre (crocidolite) deposits were discovered in Wittenoom by Lang Hancock. These materials are easily available for construction and industrial uses. Its low cost of production as a truly raw material made Australian manufacturers go ballistic.

  4. Asbestos Danger Still Lingers In Perth Even though the use of asbestos has been prohibited since 2003 in Australia, many old buildings still contain asbestos flooring, insulation, ceiling tiles, siding and other items. Hence, when renovation or refurbishment projects take place in the home or workspace, these things must be handled very carefully. Source:

  5. What About Asbestos Removal? The removal of higher risk asbestos-containing materials (sprayed asbestos coatings, asbestos insulation, asbestos lagging and most work involving asbestos insulating board (AIB) should only be carried out by a licensed contractor. Source:

  6. The Role of an Asbestos Removal Contractor Asbestos removal is typically required before an older building is demolished, prior to any maintenance or renovation that could disturb asbestos containing materials or when asbestos containing materials are damaged. An asbestos removal contractor will determine whether and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) license is required for the job.

  7. License For Asbestos Removal The requirements for handling different types of ACMs are: • Non-friable material that does not exceed 10 square meters in area can be removed without a license • Over ten square meters of non-friable material must be removed by a Class-A or Class-B licensed removalist • Friable materials must be removed by a class-A licensed removalist
