What is an Automatic Cell Planning Tool? • Automatically tunes the physical configuration of a cellular radio network based on prediction and measurement data. • Site Selection • Antenna Configuration • Height • Tilt • Antenna Direction • Antenna Type • Pilot Power • Does not replace planning tool, but complements • no propagation model • Also useful for post processing and analysing drivetest data • RSCP, Ec/Io, Pilot Pollution, Active Set Size • Key Performance Indicators for events
Parameter1 (eg tilt) Parameter2 (eg azimuth) How ACP Algorithm Works • Based on Powell’s Algorithm • Evaluate one parameter after another • Start from red combination, test combinations and change configuration until best (green) combination reached • + Heuristics: eg. Cells & parameters in order of relevance
What are the advantages of ACP? • Network improvement • Improves radio environment with secured coverage and maximized network quality and capacity. • Efficiency Gains • Speed – runs faster than manual process. Depends on a few factors: PC performance, Size of area to optimise, Resolution of data and number of changes • Minimal user input – lower cost of service, focus on high margin work • Accurate Modelling • Predictions are more realistic than planning tool because based on real drivedata.
What are the disadvantages of ACP? • Garbage in, Garbage out • Poor propagation model will be a problem in design phase • Key: Input data needs to be accurate and complete • Drive data should be thorough for higher accuracy • Need to control changes • Eg don’t uptilt boomer sites • Need to review changes • some can be aggressive
ACP Features • Path Loss Tuning • Process of using drivetest data to adjust the path loss predictions for higher accuracy • Neighbour List Optimisation • User Levels • Administrator can lock certain parameters to ensure consistent settings • Post Processing capabilities • Useful for many technologies: • GSM, UMTS/HSDPA, CDMA/EVDO, Indoor • Compatible with most popular tools • Planning: Asset, Atoll, CellPlanner, Odyssey • Measurement: TEMS, Agilent, Panasonic

Path Loss Tuning Concept • Pathloss tuning corrects the predicted pathloss maps directly according to the pilot RSCP measurements from drive tests. • Two types of tuning • Local: those pixels with drive test data • Global: those pixels without drive test data • Ensure the Scrambling Codes and Cell_IDs in the planning tool and ACP match the real network

Settings for Optimisation (1) • Site Constraints • Depending on real world constraints • Done on a site by site or global basis • Types: Electrical Tilt, Mechanical Tilt, Pilot Power, Antenna Direction, Antenna Type • Antenna Families • Each antenna has a set of electrical tilts = “family” • During optimisation, ACP will choose best pattern in family • Important: Planning Tool should be loaded with all antennas and patterns before using ACP • Antenna Groups • For antenna type optimisation, each antenna is assigned a group • During optimisation, ACP can select the best antenna within the group • Site Candidate Groups • During planning or expansion programs, ACP can assign the best candidate amongst a group of defined sites • It can also choose the best height of the candidates
