  2. The Beginning The design for the breakwater was for 1,000 feet long when it was first built. All of the repairs and additions over the years have made the breakwater 4,175 feet long. http://www.nan.usace.army.mil/project/vermont/burweb/

  3. Businesses The breakwater was first built to help the maritime commercial industry. It also expanded other businesses because of the traffic coming from the Champlain Canal. In 1873 Burlington was the third largest lumber port in the United States. http://www.nan.usace.army.mil/project/vermont/burweb/

  4. The Construction The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers designed and built the structure. Congress approved the construction in 1834. The project was finished in 1854.   6. The Breakwater Today • Today it helps us to understand historical information by looking at how the breakwater was constructed. It shows architectural and other historical facts about Burlington and our waterfront.
