  5. Why do you Need a Resume? • To get a job • To stand out • To apply for college

  6. ABC’s of Resume WritingQuick Tips: • Appropriate email—Make sure your email address is professional • Be short and sweet—Don’t get too wordy • Correct mistakes—Once you’ve finished your resume, make sure you have 2-3 people proof-read it for mistakes

  7. ABC’s Continued… • Don’t abbreviate—only abbreviate state initials, which should be capitalized. St., Ave., Rd., should all be spelled out • Evaluate your references—Ask your references for permission before putting them on your resume. • Format—Format the font and size of the text, and make sure everything is in the same format throughout your resume.

  8. Bring a resume even when it’s not required • Resume should be on resume paper • Employers typically look at each resume for only 20 seconds! • Your resume should be perfect, employers sometimes get hundreds of resumes and one mistake could cost you the job Employer Perspective

Now: • Go directly to Naviance (www.connection.naviance.com/shsmn) or through the South High Website Home Page under Quick Links • Login (if you have trouble remembering your username or password go see Ms. Rates at her desk) • Have your completed resume worksheet out to refer to • Open Word • Click File • Click New • Click Resumes and CVs • Click Basic Resumes • Click the first resume titled Resume (Essential Design) • Put your information into the resume template Instructions

  17. 5 minutes before the bell rings: Save your resume to your documents as (first name, last name, resume, today’s date) Go to Naviance (you should already have this up) Click on the My Planner tab Click on Tasks Assigned to Me Click on MLP 9.5 Resume Click on upload a document Find your resume and click upload file Logout and shut your computer down *Reminder you can always work on updating this resume on your own and you should continually do so as you add experience. Resumes are required to get a job (including Step Up Summer Jobs), apply to college and to apply for a scholarship. Instructions Continued
