Metaphor • A comparison between two unlike things • Direct metaphor—directly compares the two things using a verb such as “is” • Example—The city is a sleeping child • Implied metaphor—suggests the comparison between the two things without stating it directly • Example—The city sleeps peacefully • BOTH identify a city that has its lights out with a person who is sleeping

  3. Simile • A comparison between two unlike things using the words: • Like • As • Than • Examples: • The moon shines like a shiny coin • Eva’s eyes are as glassy as marbles • Lucy feels lighter than a grasshopper

  4. Personification • A metaphor where human qualities are given to something non-human (an animal, object or idea) • Examples: • Every computer whispers its secrets • White House Digs In Its Heels on Budget Issue • A stubborn cough • Love is blind
