  1. LET US BUILD PEACE

  2. Today we talk a lot about peace and it is the most common theme in debates and meetings. Often however, our idea of peace is not quite the right one. The term comes from the latin word “PAX”. In Greek “PEACE” is “EIRENE”, in Hebrew “SHALOM”, in Arabic “SALAM”. It requires an agreement, a goal, a negotiation and then a dialogue. It is a very positive idea that fills you spiritually. Nevertheless, when we go to look up its definition in most dictionaries, we constantly find: absence of war. This is a very simplistic and reductive definition, certainly not the best one.

  3. War

  4. Wars have always been disastrous to our planet. Millions and millions of deaths caused by selfishness of the man who then thought that war was the solution to all crises, to all problems of a country.

  5. To ensure peace in the world, it is not only needed willpower, but there are fundamental values to be respected in order to stabilize and keep peace.

  6. Although, running through our Constitution, we rarely find the word “peace”, there is no doubt that its Inspiring Principles – through the affirmation of the values of Solidarity Art.2, Equality Art.3, Freedom, Justice and Labour; thanks to the strong and constant cotribution everyone brings – are aimed at building a society based on a life of freedom, peace and dignity, which trascends the narrow limits of national boundaries.

  8. The historical roots of European Union date back to World War II. The idea of European integration was conceived to prevent from ever happening again similar massacres and destruction. Immediately after the end of the War, Europe was divided into two blocs, West and East. Thus, “The Cold War” began and lasted forty years. Western European countries created the Council of Europe in 1949 : it was a first step towards cooperation between them, but six countries wanted to do more.

  9. 9 May 1950 : The French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, presented a plan for enhanced cooperation. Subsequently, he established the celebration of “Europe Day” on the 9th May.

  10. The founding member nations of “The European Community” are Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg ,the Netherlands and these are their respective founding fathers. Konrad Adenauer ( Germany ) Winston Churchill ( The United Kingdom ) Paul Henri Spaak ( Belgium ) Jean Monnet e Robert Schuman ( France ) Alcide De Gasperi e Altiero Spinelli ( Italy ) Walter Hallstein First President of the European Committee

  11. The United Nations Organization was established by the San Francisco Charter on 26th of June 1945 in order to cooperate for a better life all over the world and for peace, after the disastrous effects of World War II. The United Nations aim at the full achievement of international cooperation on themes such as economic development, social and cultural progress, human rights and international security. As to international security in particular, they have as their goal, to keep world peace also through effective measures which prevent and eliminate any actions that could threaten and violate peace.

  12. "We, the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought unspeakable sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of large and small nations  [...] » (from the Preamble of the Charter of the United Nations)

  13. Our country is still committed to send armed forces in Peacekeeping mission in various countries to ensure a safe environment for the protection of the authorities of respective countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Lebanon.

  14. In recent years, our country is encouraging young people to pursue a military career because, given the crisis that has affected all of Europe, military career is shown as the only chance of a certain job. This incitement to military life, however, is in opposition to the peace that has been built for years in our country and throughout Europe. This long process has developed an education aimed to mould the young people of our country to avoid mistakes such as those committed by the "war lords" in the 40s and 50s.Military life also means using weapons to be prepared for a hypothetical war. Peace cannot be imposed, but it must be built day after day with loyalty and perseverance. Only then, we will say to be a Country of Peace.
