Research Design & Technology Institute for Welding & Protective Coatings with Pilot Production (WPC-I) • Established in 1992 • Staff: 160 total (20 Dr. of Tech Sciences) • Research Trends:Advanced Welding Materials; Specific Protective Coatings; Computer Technologies; Studies into Metallurgical Processes with Application of Thermodynamic Software • 8 Departments, 5 Research Laboratories, Pilot Production of special- and general-purpose welding materials/alloys, high-performance protective coatings

Research Design & Technology Institute for Welding & Protective Coatings with Pilot Production (WPC-I) • R&D studies into sherardizing started at the State Research and Production Powder Metallurgy Concern for about a decade ago. • The outcomes of primary trials have proved high potential of the proposed technology and expediency of its industrial implementation on a wide-scale basis. • Current Results: • R&D approach for development of technological processes for obtaining protective coating appl. thermodynamic simulation. • Pilot lot of items with improved Zn-coating properties.Laboratory furnaces adjusted to shielding gas atmosphere operation.

Thermo-Diffusion Zinc Coatings • Research Objective To understand the structure and phase composition of Zinc coatings and their anticorrosive effects, to elaborate technology for thermo-diffusion sherardizing with use of secondary military conversion materials • General Approach Preliminary hydrothermal treatment of zinc powder,optimization of composition of saturating medium via selection of components with allowances for their joint effect on zinc thermodynamic activity

Thermo-Diffusion Zinc Coatings • Key Technologies, Methods and Equipment • Vapor-phase galvanizing in hydrothermal mixtures; • selection of the required composition of controlled furnace atmosphere, • ensuring cyclicity of reduction-oxidizing processes; • laboratory muffle and shaft furnaces adjusted to operation with shielding gas atmosphere • Strong Points of WPC-I in the Project • Advanced R&D approaches, • thermodynamic simulation/computerization, • sherardizing temperature increases (improved kinetics of the process), • protective Zn-coatings with specified properties obtained

Thermo-Diffusion Zinc Coatings • Project Technical Description • Obtainment of theoretical and practical information on basic phenomena of interaction of metal surface with zinc vapors in hydrothermal-treated special powder media • Development of thermodynamic model and software for prediction of such interaction' results, based on the principle of change in zinc thermodynamic activity depending on the treatment mode/regime and the composition of saturating medium

Thermo-Diffusion Zinc Coatings • Expected Outcomes • Original sherardizing technology, allowing to receive high-performance zinc coatings; • assured 3-5 times-increased corrosion resistance; • design of specific furnace installation for this technology implementation. The developed technology will allow realize reduction of saturating mixtures, as well as to use secondary conversion materials as special-purpose additions.

Thermo-Diffusion Zinc Coatings • Output • Tailored approach for development of special-purpose materials and protective coatings with application of thermodynamic simulation; • “Final product” of such process is high-performance zinc coatings with improved technological and operational properties; • Ready to use technologies for reclamation of hard/heavy metal scrap & obtainment of special alloying additions of type FeMeB/B,C (where Me-Cr,Ti,W,Si,Mn,Mo etc) are available
