  2. The Purpose • The Freedom Writers shows multiple issues that students face due to socioeconomic status, race, and lack of language spoken.

  3. Nature of human beings: Racial conflicts • This movie addresses racial conflicts issue that is the greatest challenge and most dangerous they live with. Students are divided as group racial based on race and gang affiliation, which leads them to loyal to their own and aggressive to safe themselves. • In addition, each of these students would be described as underdog because of the society that they do not trust their functional academic skills and their behaviors. • Their teacher (Erin) had fulfilled her mission of bringing the students together and had faith that students would initiate change in the neighborhood.

  4. Representation of Gender • The Freedom Writers shows female gender as a strong and have the ability to effect and change a racial society and help with solving issues to have better society. Besides changing the students’ ideas about the racial, the female sex can develop multiple skills for the students

Throughout this film, it can be concluded that characters portrayed in the Freedom Writers progressed from that of a victim mentality to an empowered mindset hence depicting the theme of personal growth • Once the students stopped viewing each other in terms of their races or ethic differences, that is, Latino, African- American, Asian, and white, they initiated the start of conquering the “us versus them” mindset. • The Freedom Writers as the students were called, started to experience accomplishment, which boosted their self-confidence, hence increasing their positive self-image. Furthermore, this movie shows the view of societal perspective toward the school and the students, and the students’ academic achievement.

  6. Epistemology • The Freedom Writers is based on a true story.

  7. Pedagogy • The students played an active role rather than a passive role in the classroom. • The role of the teacher was a facilitator, providing guidelines, helping students with their projects, and suggesting them to resources that they need. • Erin encourages the students to freely talk about their problems and struggles to the rest of the class and the way they confronted them.

  8. Erin finds herself in a classroom with troubled kids who come from poverty, violence, drug abuse, and homelessness related to gang and criminal issues. Creatively, Erin applied No Child Left Behind (NCLB) by providing multiple projects to the students, which involved various aspects such as learning academic skills, experience from others’ events, and socialization. • Erin eliminates the negative from her students by giving them the daily dairy in which each student is free to write anything that he/she would like such as feelings, events, or drawing for who is not able to write.
