  4. Family Life Education for All [FLE] in XYZ ISD: Specialized FLE for all children with special needs (CWDs) in XYZ ISD. Curriculum follows Texas TEKS. Curriculum follows universal design principles (CAST, 2002) and is fully accessible to all participants. Fully funded by U.S. Dept. of Ed. grant. XYZ ISD – XYZ, Texas Family Life Education for All

Elementary §115.2.(a)(1) “In health education, students acquire the health information and skills necessary to become healthy adults and learn about behaviors in which they should and should not participate. To achieve that goal, students will understand the following: students should first seek guidance in the area of health from their parents; personal behaviors can increase or reduce health risks throughout the lifespan; health is influenced by a variety of factors; students can recognize and utilize health information and products; and personal/interpersonal skills are needed to promote individual, family, and community health.” XYZ ISD – XYZ, Texas Family Life Education for All

Students are taught the consequences of unsafe behaviors, and how to protect themselves from harm. Students are taught how to maintain healthy body systems and prevent disease. Students are taught about factors in their environment that impact, not only their health and the health of their families, but the health of their communities as well. Middle school students learn to refine their critical-thinking skills to avoid unsafe situations, analyze health information and products, and maintain healthy relationships. Students gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge and behaviors they use to safeguard their health, particularly pertaining to health risks. Students are taught how to access accurate information that they can use to promote health for themselves and others. High School §115.33 (a)(2) http://www.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter115/ch115c.html 11th-12th Grades: “In Advanced Health [Grades 11-12], students are provided opportunities for researching, discussing, and analyzing health issues. This higher level of involvement provides students with experiences designed to reinforce positive health behaviors. Students are given the opportunity to learn more about technology, how it affects health, and how to use electronic technology to gain health information. Family Life Education [FLE] Especially for Children with Differabilities (CWDs) 1975: U.S. Public Law 94-142 “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” [IDEA]: CWDs finally gain access to public education. 1997: U.S. Public Law 105-17: IDEA Improvement Act: implementation of Individual Education Plans [IEPs] in public schools (Pirofski, 2001, 1-4). Family Life Education [FLE] Especially for Children with Differabilities (CWDs) (cont’d) IDEA “mandates that special classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children from the regular education environment can occur only when the nature or severity of the [differability] is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily” (Ferguson, 1999).   17. Family Life Education [FLE] Especially Needed for CWDs CWDs (age birth-21) unfortunately often do not have the opportunities that other children have to incidentally learn FLE skills. Of special importance: attention to relationship between body and disease (Blanchett & Wolfe, 2002). 1990-2000: 40.8% rise in number of CWDs served in Texas under state-operated IDEA programs: From 350,606 to 493,850 children (U.S. Dept. of Education, 2001, Table 55).   19. Family Life Education [FLE] Especially Needed for CWDs Important to provide CWDs with FLE directly and explicitly. (Blanchett & Wolfe, 2002) Population very vulnerable to violence, discrimination by others (Blaha & Moss, 2001; Waxman & Wolfe, 1999; CNN.com, 2002). Specialized training for families, school personnel; adequate and appropriate materials needed (Stein, 1983, 56-59; Blanchett & Wolfe, 2002, 43). XYZ ISD – XYZ, Texas Family Life Education for All
