  3. In the AirHow did we contribute? • Canada trained British pilots and air crew • Trained over 130 000 people across Canada • RCAF fought in Battle of Britain shooting down many German planes • For this reason Hitler chose not to invade Britain

  4. RCAF flew over Germany dropping bombs • RCAF provided air cover for the Allied invasion of northern Europe • By 1945, 250 000 Canadians served in the RCAF

  6. On Land… How did we fight on land? The Army

  7. Fought bravely on many fronts in WWII • Early inexperience brought many casualties • 1941, fought in Hong Kong against the Japanese invaders where many were taken prisoner and eventually died

  8. Fought with the Allies in Dieppe, Normandy, North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. • By the end 730 000 Canadians served in the army

  10. The War at Sea • Canada’s Navy help the Allies win control of the Atlantic Ocean • Supplies being sent were protected by Canadian warships • Germans were a powerful killing force in the Atlantic with their U-boats

  11. By 1943 after significant losses, the RCN and BN were winning the Atlantic • With better technology (radar) and Air Force protection supply ships reached their destination • This won the Atlantic • SEE VIDEO

  13. Canada at War: Defeat of Japan • Canadian scientists played a small role in helping the US develop the atomic bomb • The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, August, 1945 • 110 000 mostly civilians died instantly • Many more died later from radiation poisoning
