  2. Purpose: To engage the interest of disadvantaged high school students (including ethnic minorities) indicating nursing as a career interest and provide academic, social, financial, and enrichment services to enhance their potential for success in the UM-Flint’s nursing program. UM-FIND activities funded by the Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Workforce Diversity Program. Grant # D19HP22225

  3. Strategies: Academic Year Programming • Future Nurses Clubs: 6 weeks after school program • Hands-on activities related to nursing as a career • Academic enrichment and supplemental support • Cultural competency and diversity awareness workshops • Sessions designed for college and BSN program preparation • Field trips: hospital and campus tours

  4. Strategies: Academic Year Programming • In-Class health promotion activities: 10 week program in partner high schools • UM-Flint BSN students work with teachers in high school health classes • Presentations and hands-on activities • Consistent with Healthy People 2020

  5. Strategies: Summer Programming • Future Nurses Institute: 6 weeks • Courses include; Fundamentals of Nursing, Reading Comprehension, Math, Biology, Health Promotion/Physical Education and Character & Cultural Development

  6. Strategies: Summer Programming • Future Nurses Institute: 6 weeks • Field trips with emphasis on physical education • Local area hospital educational tours • CPR Certification

Strategies: Academic year or Summer programming • Nursing/Health Career Fair • Emphasizes importance of health promotion, disease prevention, and nursing career preparation • Community health partners • Alumni • Demonstrations, activities, and information • High school students and parents per academic year

Successes • Students expressed high level of interest in program participation • 20% mean increase in math scores for students completing the FNI summer program • Program staff & university students as role models for high school students • Building of academic pipeline high school to college • Innovative collaboration initiative with UM-Flint Outreach Department

Challenges • Challenges with urban high schools curricula & staff that inhibits students overall college preparation • Economic and educational barriers to accessing higher education for disadvantaged/minority students • Personal challenges for disadvantaged/minority students inhibiting consistent participation in programming

  11. Lessons Learned • Further collaboration with high school partners to assist with overall college preparation and readiness • Developing more efficient strategies for parental involvement • Focusing program implementation efforts in partner high schools with most supportive staff and faculty
