  3. Introduction to IPv6 Deployment

  4. Motivation to Adopt IPv6 • Larger address space for global reachability and scalability • Simplified header for routing efficiency and performance • Efficient support for routing and route aggregation • Server-less auto-configuration, easier renumbering, multi-homing, and improved plug and play support • Security with mandatory IP Security (IPSec) support for all IPv6 devices • Improved support for Mobile IP and mobile computing devices • Enhanced multicast support with increased addresses and efficient mechanisms

  5. IPv4 Address Space Report Regional Internet Registry RIRs http://bgp.potaroo.net/ipv4/ IPv4 Address Space Exhaustion Predictors Complete Exhaustion of all available IPv4 Address Space Report Showed on 2004 : July 2040 Report Showed on 2006 : May 2027 Exhaustion of the IPv4 Unallocated Address Pool Report Showed on 2004 : October 2018 Report showed on 2006:Sep 2011

  6. Emirates IPv4 Address Space Report / UAEnic (LIR)

  7. Before Deploying IPv6 • Before beginning to plan to deploy IPv6, you should familiarize yourself with IPv6 , Most of the definition of IPv6 is under the control of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) refer to http://www.ietf.org • What the others are doing !?, The IPv6 Forum was created in 1999 to promote and advocate the IPv6 protocols and their deployment http://www.ipv6forum.com • You need to know some IPv6 basics like: • IPv6 address types and formats • ICMPv6, neighbor discovery, security, and mobility • IPv6 routing protocol OSPFv3, BGP4+,IS-IS, RIPng, EIGRPv6 • IPv6 integration and coexistence strategies ,vendors support • IPv6 host configuration (Solaris, Microsoft, and FreeBSD) • What to test in IPv6 and How !? • How to connect to the IPv6 Internet • You need to answer questions like Why (Motivation) !?, What is your strategy, Scope, Plan, Budget and timeline !?, and how you are going to deploy !? .

  8. How to Plan Deploying IPv6 ? Service Providers • ISPs should plan IPv6 deployment in three phases: • Providing an IPv6 service at the customer access level • Running IPv6 within the core infrastructure itself • Interconnecting with other IPv6 service providers Enterprises • Two key ways of evaluating and assessing IPv6 products and services are: • Set up an IPv6 domain and connect to an existing network • Set up two or more IPv6 domains and interconnect them over your existing IPv4 infrastructures

  9. Pre-Deployment Tasks • Before deploying IPv6, • Get and Plan your IPv6 address space, (service provider) you need to register for an IPv6 address contact RIRs LIRs , (enterprise) request an IPv6 prefix from your service provider • Set up your DNS, • Select IPv6 Network management tools, • And select required routing protocols.

  10. Deployment Strategies A wide range of techniques have been identified and implemented worldwide, basically falling into the following categories: • (1) dual-stack techniques, to allow IPv4 and IPv6 to co-exist in the same devices and networks • (2) tunneling techniques, to avoid dependencies when upgrading hosts, routers, or regions • (3) translation techniques, to allow IPv6-only devices to communicate with IPv4-only devices • (4) Dedicated Data Links, new IPv6 sites or migrating existing sites. All of these are used in combination

  26. Current Etisalat IPv6 Deployment Status

  27. Etisalat IPv6 Project Objectives • Build scalable nation-wide IPv6 native test network. • Ensure IPv6 standards compliance for Etisalat current and future systems. • Establish test environment to evaluate the compliance of hardware and software with IPv6 standards • Work towards exposure of the IPv6 standards within Universities, Colleges and Research Centers in UAE.

  28. Contract Clause for all new tenders to confirm IPv6 compliance. Added in year 2001 • All the supplied systems (hardware/Software) wherever IP connectivity is required should support IPv6 and IPv4 (simultaneously if required) with latest standards of IETF, ITU, ANSI and other governing Communication standards. • If the system is not compliant to the above, the supplier should indicate the roadmap to implement IPv6 and clearly state when the system would be compliant to IPv6. The upgrade should be free of cost. • Further the vendor should confirm that the product would be kept abreast with the IPv6 development. Note:- For existing systems Concerned sections should obtain the “Statement of Direction towards IPv6” from the Vendors who supplied those systems.
