  2. Addiction • Not a moral deficiency; chronic, relapsing, brain disease • Initial use is a decision, after that what happens to the brain is not • Will not know if you will become addicted until after exposure

Addiction Defined Addiction is a chronic, relapsing, brain disease marked by changes in the brain that lead to a compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences (NIDA) Drugs change the structure of the brain and how it works (NIDA) Changes are long lasting and can lead to harmful behaviors

  4. The Hijacked Brain • Genetics is a factor • Genetically predisposed/use can lead to addiction • Natural reward pathway/addiction is the altering of the natural reward pathway • Drives our feelings of motivation and reward • Allows us to feel good when we do things essential to our survival

  5. Initial Use • Individuals pick up for the first time for various reasons • To insulate emotional pain, due to physical pain, or simply curiosity • Regardless of the reason, addiction can result • The reward pathway become hijacked and normal desires of life are replaced by the addictive substance

  6. Why Does It Matter • More education for medical professionals; they do not always know what to do with addicts • Educate from a young age so that informed decisions can be made by young people • Cost to society/Billions

This article highlights the components of addiction, the various stages, and what happens in the brain of an individual that abuses substances and becomes addicted. This article also highlights genetic statistics and discusses remission and therapy as alternative for individuals who become addicted.

  8. Annotated Bibliography • Research, 1293, 61-75. This article focuses on the brain stress systems and addiction. This article looks at the state of emotion and individual may experience when they discontinue use, and why these changes in emotions occur. This article highlights arousal and stress systems of the brain, and the changes that occur when an individual becomes dependant on a substance. This article also explains how the part of the brain which motivation and drive are affected when an individual becomes dependant and addicted.

  9. Annotated Bibliography • Volkow, N. D., Baler, R. (2010). Brain Imaging and Addiction. Encyclopedia of Behavioral Neuroscience, 194-202. The information in this article discusses the differences in brain function of individuals addicted to substances vs. those who are not addicted. Through the use of brain imaging, the defects in the brain of addicts, with regard to dopamine and the pre-frontal cortex have been discovered. These discoveries are paramount with regard to properly treating addicted individuals therapeutically in order to heal the brain and restore better function.
