  2. 1. How do I find a job? • Most resumes look the same • Focus on accomplishments & skills • Need to accentuate differences • Not by trying to be different • But, by subtly highlighting information about yourself • Who are you and what can you do for the company?

  3. 1. How do I find a job? 3 Part Model How will the employer perceive you? Who are you? What is the company’s perspective? MUST BE PERFECTLY ALIGNED *Should you make an individual resume for each company?

  4. 2. How do I succeed in my job? • New Rules • Daily choice – credit for your group or credit for yourself? • Business is not a democracy! • Make a contribution • Manage how you are perceived • Quality of work • Value of work

  5. 2. How do I succeed in my job? • Develop yourself – EVERYDAY • Focus energy on acquiring new skills, not worrying about WHEN a promotion will occur • Today’s organizations are lean – promotions are not common, so time should be spent developing yourself as a viable candidate

  7. 3. How do I move to the next level? • With every promotion, the rules change! • What works for you at one level can be a liability at the next level. • “Rules” are dependent on the work environment • Boss • Peers • Subordinates

How do I move to the next level? • Entry Level – Technical Skills • Eagerness to learn • Willingness to do what others do not want to do (there is no competition, but great visibility) • Further visibility by having a great attitude towards work • Use your technical skills but let others help you define the problem

  10. 3. How do I move to the next level? • Executive Level – Conceptual Skills • Get to know yourself • Beyond competence • LOYALTY is key • What opportunities outside of work do you take advantage of in order to build relationships? • Golf • Tennis • Social Work

  13. 4. How do I succeed in life? • When you are young, you focus on friends and give a lot of time and effort to maintain these relationships. • As you grow older, there are multiple demands on your time.

  14. 4. How do I succeed in life? • Success in life becomes a balancing act that requires a great deal of DISCIPLINE. • Discipline ≡ letting your head rule your desires. • Discipline ≡ knowing when to say yes and when to pass.
