  1. SPEAK OUT! Cal-Nev-Ha CKI District Service Initiative 2013-2014: Anti-Bullying By Leonne Chung, District Service Chair Kathy Dong, District Service Committee Cristina Magdaleno, District Service Committee

  2. Why is the DSI unique? • This is an issue that a lot of children, teens, and adults go through at school, the workplace, and the internet. • As of 2011, 20% of 9-12th grade students nationwide reported to have been bullied.

  3. What is bullying? • Bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior towards a group or an individual. • Trademark behaviors of bullying include but are not limited to: making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically/verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

  4. Types of bullying • Verbal bullying: • teasing, name-calling, taunting, and threatening • Social bullying: • spreading rumors, leaving someone out, public emabarrasement • Physical bullying: • making rude hand gestures, hitting, pushing, etc....

  5. Our Mission • To educate and train the community how to identify this problem as well as how to assist the victims. • Our goal is for CNH CKI to bring awareness about this problem that plagues our society through advocacy, action, and education.

  6. Service Projects Ideas for You and Your School • Assist at walks and events hosted by the anti-bullying organizations. • Bullying Prevention Awareness Month is in October. • Host an anti-bullying/self-defense workshop at a your school, elementary school or high school. • Mentor children and teens who have been bullied.

  7. MORE Service Project Ideas • Create a conflict-mediation program • Train your members in how to deal with conflict so they can act as mediators. • Anti-Bullying Night • Host an event partnering with an anti-bullying organization to bring awareness and to remember and honor the victims of bullying. • Boothing at your school with pamphlets and other means to educate your peers about bullying.

  8. MORE Service Project Ideas! • Mentorship Program • This program can be for a day, a few days, a week, or all year even! • Create relationships with people who have been bullied. • Talk to the school and create a safe space so students can feel comfortable and welcome somewhere. • Any other IDEAS that are not listed in the slides! We definitely encourage creativity.

  9. Organizations YOU can work with: • PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center • www.pacer.org/bullying • Stomp Out Bullying • www.stompoutbullying.org • The Trevor Project • www.thetrevorproject.org/ • Another great resource to find local orgs: • www.volunteermatch.org

  10. How to Save Money and/or Fund for these Projects • Arts and Crafts Projects • Money from your college • There are some campus resources that will give you money if you need it for your club. You can contact your Student Council or any campus resources for it. • Creating a project where you can use the organization's resources. • Openly tell the organization your budget and see if they have ideas on how you and their organization can save on the project. • Work with a campus org. related to bullying • They will have some money that they can use to fund the project so less funds from your club will be used.

  11. Things to look forward to: • You will be able to be more creative with the DSI. Think out of the box! • A Good Challenge for all clubs, big or small. • An issue that is becoming more widespread through the use of social media.

  12. Things to Consider: • Difficult to have service projects with children who have been bullied, but there are alternative ways. • Because of the sensible nature of the issue, it might be difficult to be identified to those who are not trained. • Difficult to find local organizations to work with.

  13. Significance to International Themes • Focusing on the Future: Children • Children are part of the future and with fighting against bullying, we will be able to help prevent children from experiencing these situations if they are educated about the topic.

  14. Thank you so much for your time!Squirtles Out! • If you have any additional questions, comments, and suggestions, • feel free to contact us!
