  1. Prepositions • Definition: Words that RELATE a noun or pronoun to some other word in a sentence

  2. Prepositions I swam to the raft. I swam under the raft. I swam around the raft. I swam near the raft. I swam from the raft. I swam past the raft. Notice how the prepositions change the RELATIONSHIP between swam and raft.

  4. Prepositions The paint on the canvas is dry. • The preposition ON shows a relationship between the noun PAINT and the noun CANVAS.

  5. Compound Prepositions • A preposition can consist of more than one word. Use acrylic paints instead of oils. • The compound preposition INSTEAD OF shows a relationship between the noun PAINTS and the noun OILS.

  9. Preposition or Adverb? • The OBJECT is the key. • An adverb does not have an object. Adverbs only modify. • A preposition always has an object. Jerry met me outside. adverb Jerry met me outside the library. prep object
