  2. Biotechnology Institute • Non-profit dedicated to outreach and education on biotechnology • Established in 2000 • Separate from BIO

  3. Mission • To engage, excite, and educate the public about biotechnology and its potential for solving problems of human health, food, and environmental problems

  4. Three Major Components • Education at K-12 level, by training teachers in biotechnology content • Working at systemic level, on educational curriculums to enhance biotechnology content • Higher education, workforce, and diversity

  5. Community Colleges Initiative • To acquaint biotech industry with the skills training, content knowledge, and workforce development capacities of community colleges • To acquaint community colleges with the potential of developing biotechnology programs that meet workforce demands

  6. California Program • September 2004 – Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, Claremont, CA • February 2005 – J. David Gladstone Institutes at UC San Francisco, Mission Bay • December 2005 – Burnham Institute, La Jolla, CA

  8. Interest in community colleges • Different workforce levels • Biotech is maturing industry with evolving workforce needs • Need for skills training, refreshing skills • Workforce retraining
