  3. Our Innovators Home Dr. Paul Root and Dr. Jolie Stepaniak are lead instructors in HFCC's Biotechnology Program.  This program, which started in 2009, was developed to train students for positions as technicians in the region's biotechnology-based industries and institutions. This program has directly involved Southeastern Michigan's biotechnology employers in curricular development and seeks to specifically address regional needs for biotechnology technicians. The curriculum for this program is a direct outgrowth of the technical and workplace competencies these employers have identified, and it integrates authentic work-based experiences, training in modern instrumentation and new technologies, and rigorous STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) content to produce adaptable technicians that support the changing workplace. This partnership between HFCC and regional biotechnology industries makes the Biotechnology Program stand out among local colleges and universities. 4. Teaching Biotechnology Through Real-world Projects: Species Identification Through DNA Analysis Students in BIO 261: Nucleic Acids, a course in HFCC's Biotechnology Program, had a unique final exam in which they were charged with identifying an organism using just its DNA. Each student received a swab of cells from an unknown organism, extracted DNA from the cells, and designed and executed an experiment to determine the species that the cells had come from. The students used polymerase chain reaction -- the same process that forensic DNA labs use -- to find the answer. This experiment not only tested the students' experimental design and laboratory skills, but provided them with a fun and exciting real-world challenge.
