  2. The idea To enrich the HMD with cause-of-death data series for a number of currently participating countries.

  3. Limitations of WHO database • Discrepancies with official mortality counts • Problem with cause of death shortlists (lack of consistency) • Not a user-friendly collection of data • Lack of documentation

  4. Limitation of EUROSTAT data • Limited to past 15 (10) years • Only European countries • Only 65 cause-of-death categories

  5. Basic principles • Ensure consistency with HMD series in terms of total death counts and death rates by sex and age as well as format • Include raw data only • Reduce the number of cause-of-death categories by aggregation over about 100 group (shortlist of COD) • Provide data by 5-year age groups (not by single years of age) • Publish supporting documentation • Limit access to input data

  6. A (preliminary) prototype • US cause-of-death series

  7. Initial plan • Produce series for a total of 8-10 countries over the next 3 years: • The US • England and Wales • Canada? • The Netherlands? • France? • Japan? • Sweden?

  8. Main issues open to discussion • Additional series such as • Cause-deleted life tables • multiple decrement lifetables, etc… • Shortlist of cause to use so as to • Ensure maximum use for research purposes • Minimize disruptions • Promote comparibility with most widely used shortlist (EUROSTAT, National statistical offices, etc…) • Data quality indicators
