Luigi Provasoli, born in Italy in 1908, graduated from Milan and published 17 scientific papers. When World War II began, he relocated to New York, becoming the head of the biology department at St. Francis College. He collaborated with Haskins lab on algae and protozoans, developing artificial seawater media crucial for marine biology. Provasoli later joined Yale, refining culture media for aquatic organisms and studying interactions between algae and bacteria. He founded the Journal of Phycology in 1965 and, after retiring in 1978, dedicated his later years to cardiac surgery and life in Italy until his death in 1992.
