  2. What is sentence fluency? Sentences + Fluency = Sentences that flow smoothly together. You will be graded on: • Sentences that begin in different ways • Sentences that vary in length and structure • Sentences that flow smoothly together

  3. Variety is good! • Variety is when you use different kinds of sentences! • You will need to use a number of different lengths, beginnings, and kinds of sentences. Example: “We went to the beach. We saw seagulls. We went home.” WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE EXAMPLE? --- The sentences are too choppy; they do not flow together well. Let’s make it sound better! “When we went to the beach, we saw seagulls and then decided to go home.”

  4. Sentence Length Use a variety of different sentence lengths. Examples: • Long and stretchy sentences Every year during summer vacation, my whole family would go all the way to Colorado to enjoy a week of camping in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. • Short and snappy sentences During vacation we had a great time!

  5. Sentence Beginnings • Start sentences with a variety of beginnings. Example: I am very excited to be your teacher. I hope we can have fun this year. I will teach you many new things. I am happy you are in my class. How could we change this paragraph to sound better? I am thrilled to be your teacher! This year will be full of fun and learning. It is exciting to have you in my class!

Kinds of sentences There are different types of sentences… • Simple: One independent thought A horse eats grass. • Compound: Two or more simple sentences joined together The horse ate the grass, and the cow jumped over the moon. • Declarative: Statement The horse ran around the track. • Interrogative: A question statement Does the horse have a name? • Exclamatory: Exclamation I am so excited to see the horse run! • Imperative: A command Don’t feed the horse a carrot.

Sentence Fluency Read your writing aloud and listen to its rhythm… • Did I use a variety of sentence lengths? • Did I use different sentence beginnings? • Are there different kinds of sentences in my writing? • Is my paper easy to read? • As I read my writing, does it sound choppy and rough or does it flow smooth and natural?
