  2. Evidence of Relationship Between Hand Hygiene and Healthcare-Associated Infections • Substantial evidence that hand hygiene reduces the incidence of infections • Historical study: Semmelweis • More recent studies: rates lower when handwashing was performed

  3. Patients most susceptible to infection • Immunity. • Age. • Physical/psychological well-being. • Underlying disease. • Medical intervention.

  4. How Infection Spreads • Direct transmission: • directly from person-to-person e.g. oral or sexual. • Direct contact, skin to skin • Indirect transmission: • via food or water • via inanimate objects e.g. equipment and surfaces • via the environment e.g. contaminated equipment, soil and dust.

  6. Specific Indications for Hand Hygiene • Before: • Patient contact or intervention • After: • Contact with a patient • Contact with body fluids or excretions, non-intact skin, wound dressings • Removing gloves • When hands are visibly dirty, contaminated, or soiled, wash with soap and water.
