History: Island County CommunityHealth Advisory Board (CHAB) The [Community Health] Advisory Board shall assess the needs of community services . . . for local public health, develop policies and procedures by which Island County can address those needs, and assist in assuring the needs identified are met for citizens of Island County. (Island County Ordinance 8.13.020, 1992)

Mission Statement • ... to assist the Board of Health in maintaining the physical, mental, and social well-being of Island County residents. • ... basic tasks will be to: • Provide for communication between Island County Board of Health and the community at large. • Identify community health care needs based on current data and testimony. • Set priorities based on these factors to assure present and future health of the county’s population. • Formulate recommendations, action plans, and policy to the Board of Health for implementation. • Evaluate the impact of enacted policies and programs on our communities.

  5. Why Are We Talking to You Tonight? • Critical that you understand how policy decisions made in Olympia in 2011 will impact IC • Keith Higman, Director of ICPH, to speak to the state of their budget, impact on the health of IC residents, and how your decisionmaking will hold further impacts

  7. ICPH/IC Budget Impacts • Keith-need to succinctly and strongly share the impacts • This may be broken out from the previous slide, Carrie and Keith to work on showing this…. • Services and activities, population numbers here?????

  8. Two Appeals: • First, save programs that impact people, particularly vulnerable populations such as • Low income (those trying to meet basic needs of food, housing, healthcare, etc.) • Poor health (such as those with physical disabilities, mental health conditions, chronic diseases, etc.) • Unemployed • Uninsured or underinsured • Families at risk with young children at home

  9. Two appeals • Second, continue support for county programs that already serve these populations: • Public health (families/babies, communicable and chronic disease supported by SB 5930) • Mental health tax initiative (this has SAVED our local mental health system)

  10. Summary • CHAB’s presentation this year is not about what we’ve done but on what we need!
