  1. There is ONE Baptism • Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; Which One?

  2. One Body • Col 1:24 • I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, • (NKJV)

  3. 4 The Baptisms of the Scriptures

  4. Which baptism is in force today? • 1. The Baptism of John?

  5. Mat. 3:11 Mistranslation • King James Version Precaution: • "I indeed baptize you with water…” • Should be translated (as in more accurate translations of the verse)… • "I indeed baptize you in water…”

  6. Baptism = Full Immersion • John 3:23 • Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized. • (NKJV) • Gk. “bapti-“ lit. means to “dip, immersion, dipping in water”

  7. John’s Baptism: Recipients • (Matthew 3:6-8) • and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? "Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, • (Acts 19:4) • Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."

  8. John’s Baptism: The Accomplishment • (Mark 1:4) • John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. • How? • (Acts 19:4) [again] • Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."

  9. Why John’s Baptism is not the “one baptism” for today: • It was not the baptism commanded and practiced by the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. • (Acts 2:38) • Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  10. Why John’s Baptism is not the “one baptism” for today: • It was not the baptism commanded and practiced by the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. • John’s baptism was not considered sufficient by Paul.

  11. (Acts 19:1-5) • And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  12. Why John’s Baptism is not the “one baptism” for today: • It was not the baptism commanded and practiced by the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. • John’s baptism was not considered sufficient by Paul. • John’s baptism considered insufficient by John himself!

  13. (John 1:28-29) • These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (NKJV)

  14. Why John’s Baptism is not the “one baptism” for today: • It was not the baptism commanded and practiced by the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. • John’s baptism was not considered sufficient by Paul. • John’s baptism considered insufficient by John himself! • Ananias did not practice John’s baptism.

  15. (Acts 22:16) • 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.' (NKJV)

  16. John’s Ministry: To Bear Witness to Christ • (John 1:15) • John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.'" (NKJV)

  17. The Extent of the Validity of John’s Baptism • (Matthew 28:19-20) • "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

  18. Which baptism is in force today? • The Baptism of John? • The Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

  19. Holy Spirit Baptism: Never Commanded, Promised • (John 15:26) • "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. (NKJV)

  20. Holy Spirit Baptism: Enacted By God Alone (Man Cannot Evoke) • (Acts 1:4-5) • And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." (NKJV)

  21. (1 Timothy 2:4) • who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (NKJV)

  22. Confirmation of the Message • (Hebrews 2:3-4) • how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? (NKJV)

  23. Purpose of Holy Spirit Baptism • (John 16:13-16) • "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. "All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. "A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father." (NKJV)

  24. (John 14:26) • "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

  25. Which baptism is in force today? • The Baptism of John? • The Baptism of the Holy Spirit? • Baptism of Fire?

  26. (Matthew 3:11-12) • "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (NKJV)

  27. Fire=Punishment,Destruction, Judgment • (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8) • and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NKJV)

  28. If Baptism by Fire Saves… • …then the apostles were not saved, for they were baptized with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, not fire. • …the Pentecostals of Acts 2 were not saved, for they were never baptized w/fire • …the household of Cornelius was not saved because they did not receive baptism by fire, but rather they received water Baptism (Ac. 2:47) • …then Apollos was mistaken since He commanded water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus (Ac. 19:5) • …and Peter was mistaken, since he said that the baptism of water saves us (1 Pet. 3:20-21)

  29. Which baptism is in force today? • The Baptism of John? • The Baptism of the Holy Spirit? • Baptism of Fire? • The Baptism of the Commission (Water)?

  30. If Baptism in Water is not necessary… • …you can get to Heaven without remission of sins, for in Ac. 2:38 Peter said, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…” • …you can be saved without putting on Christ, since Paul was inspired to write, “…as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” • …you can get to Heaven without a good conscience before God, since Peter said that was a result of baptism (1 Pet. 3:21)

  31. If Baptism in Water is not necessary… • …you can get to Heaven without being saved, since Peter also wrote in those verses that is what baptism does. • …you can be saved without following Christ in the example of His death, since that is what Paul described baptism as symbolic of being in Romans 6:3-5 and Col. 2:12. • …you can be saved without being part of the church, the body of Christ, since 1 Cor. 12:13 tells us baptism adds us to the body. • …you can be saved without the death \ of Christ, since Romans 6:3 tells us that baptism is where we meet the death and blood of Christ.
