  2. Overview • Analytical chemistry involves determining the composition of a substance. • Analytical chemists measure the amount of a chemical present in a substance. • Utilize a variety of equipment in their analysis.

  3. Job Functions & Activities • Analytical chemists develop new analytical techniques. • Perform analysis on samples. • Analyze products to ensure quality. • Report and explain their results.

  4. Employment • Government • Pharmaceutical Industries • Academia • Food Industries • Private Laboratories • Instrument Manufactures

  5. Personal Characteristics • Good record keeping skills. • Computer skills. • Ability to keep up with ever changing instrumentation. • Ability to interpret data. • Communicate effectively.

  6. Job Outlook • Companies are decreasing their lab staff. • Companies now hire short-term. • Analytical chemists with experience using instruments are always in demand.

  7. Education and Training • Bachelor’s degree is a minimum. Many jobs require a master’s degree or higher. • Experience using analytical techniques and instrumentation. • Experience working in a laboratory environment. • Use computer and instrument software.
