  4. My Deployment • October–November 2008 (last leg) • Trinidad and Tobago • Guyana • USS Kearsarge: Grey-hulled • Veterinary mission

  5. Veterinary Mission

  6. Trinidad • Port of Spain • Back and forth from ship to land, helo and boats • Training/Coordination with vet students and technicians • Examinations, treatments, vaccinations • Spays/neuters at SPCA

  7. Guyana • Georgetown • RON in tent cities • Vaccination of working horses, owner education • Preventive vet med clinics • Husbandry at Georgetown Zoo

  8. Before the trip • First heard in winter before (~9 months notice) • Asked my wife • Secured permission from supervisors & agency (liaison) • Actual travel plans last minute

  9. Preparation • VetPAC calls regarding deployment • Spoke with those previously deployed • Especially those on same ship • Looked over items to bring, packed early • Navy training courses (take them early) • Flexible

  11. What I wished I had brought • More comfort things • 2 small working alarm clocks! • Phone call capability

  12. What was helpful • Laundry bags, soap, dryer sheets • Notebook • Flashlight • Dramamine • Water bottles, drink mix, snacks • DEET/permethrin, sunscreen • Small digital camera • Backpack/sturdy bag for RON

  13. When in Rome…

  14. Uniform/Clothes • 3 pairs of blue coveralls, 1 pair boots, no cover • 3 BDUs, 1 cover, 1 belt, good boots • Khakis optional? • Whites depends. • 2 shirts, 1 shorts for PT • 2 civilian outfits

  15. Working with other services/groups • Navy very accommodating and appreciative • Learned a lot from other services • Practice your salute! • Know customs, courtesies, and acronyms! • NGOs • Occasional challenges with other services

  16. Shipboard Life • Hurry up and wait • Darken the ship • Taps and other shipboard customs • Warship • Laundry, haircuts, exercise • Food • Religious services

  24. Lessons learned • Pre-deployment site survey—vets involved • Clearly define specifics of mission in advance • Bring things that will help you cope with stressful times
