  2. Introduction: • Charles John Huffam Dickens • English writer and social critic • Knows to be one of the greatest novelists of Victorian period. • During his life time, his work did not get that much fame • By the 20th century, his literary genius was acknowledged by critics and scholars.

  3. Early life: • Born 7 February 1812, at Londport in Portsea Island. • Son of John and Elizabeth Dickens. • His father worked a clerk in Navy Pay office. • Soon after his birth, he moved to Norfolk street, Bloomsbury. • At the age of 4, Charles Dickens moved again to Norfolk street, Bloomsbury.. Where he stayed there till the age of 11. • Charles Dickens liked to spent most of his times outdoors and reading.

Education: • Charles Dickens first school was a Dame school. • At the age of 12, he went to the William Giles’ school in Chatham. • In 1824, after a year of joining William Giles’ school, he left to join the Wellington House Academy in North London. • At the 15 of he left school to work as a clerk.

  5. Career: • 1827, He started working as a law clerk. • November 1828, started working as a freelance reporter for different London newspapers. • December 1833, he wrote his first piece of work “A Dinner at Poplar Walk”. • September 26, 1834, he started doing street sketches. • February 1837, he wrote the novel “Oliver Twist.” • 1843, he wrote the novel “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” and “A Christmas Carol.” • 1846, he wrote “Dombey and Son” • April 1859 he released “A Tale of Two Cities.” • Before his death, he finishes “Our Mutual Friend” in 1865.

  6. Personal Life: • February 23, 1824, Charles Dickens father was prisoned. May 28, he was released from prison. • 1830, Charles Dickens falls in love with Maria Beadnell, but was sent to school in Pairs. • April 2, 1836, Charles Dickens Marries Catherine Hogarth, a year later they have their first child, a son “Charles”. • In 1838, they have their second child, Mamie Dickens was born. A year later, his daughter, Kate was born. • By 1852, Charles Dickens had this 10th child and final, Edward.

  7. Late Life (Death): • On June 8, 1870, Charles Dickens suffered a stroke. • He never regained consciousness from the stroke. June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died at the Gad’s Hill Place at the age of 58 years. • He died while he was working on his novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. • His last words were “On the ground”. • He was buried Poet's Corner at London's Westminster Abbey.

Conclusion: • One of the greatest English Writers. • As a child, Charles Dickens have love reading. • Ended his education at just the age of 15 to start working. • Wrote many novels and short stories. • Married to Catherine Hogarth and had 10 children. • During his lifetime he did not get that much fame, it was during the 20th century when his literacy genius was acknowledged.
