  1. Effects of the Civil War Political Cartoon A political cartoon is an interpretation of an event through the use of an illustration. Cartoonists use humor to inform and influence public opinion. Interpreting political cartoons from the past helps us understand opinions surrounding historical events. Cartoonists use visual devices such as symbols (an image or object that stands for something else), caricatures (exaggeration of physical features to create a positive or negative image)and analogies (comparing two unlike things to each other) to make their point. What do you see? Does the author use any symbols, caricatures, words or analogies to get his point across? How? What can you infer and support from this cartoon? What message is the author sending? What political effect of the Civil War is this cartoon referencing? How do you know?
