  2. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS • Plan was sailing west to get East (India) • Venetian (Italy) – He tried to sell his plan to anybody who would listen • Henry VII – England • John II – Portugal • Charles – France • All declined

  3. Eventually Ferdinand & Isabella of Spain agree to fund the voyage • “14 hundred and 92 Columbus sailed the ocean blue”

  4. Columbus miscalculates • Underestimates the size of the Atlantic • Overestimates the size of the land mass

  5. Four Voyages • Caribbean • Central and South America

  6. Columbus died thinking he had failed

  7. 1493 – Line of Demarcation – Papal decree • East = Portugal West = Spain • 1494 – Treaty of Tordesillas – reaffirms the line
